Thanks to a £10,000 grant from HIWCF’s Including Communities Fund, Basingstoke NeighbourCare has been able to continue running its much-loved Community Cafés and social groups – offering vital connection and support to older residents across the Basingstoke area.

Formed in 1997 to provide accompanied transport for those in genuine need, Basingstoke NeighbourCare has grown to become a lifeline for many. In addition to transport and befriending services, the charity also offers handyman and gardening assistance, and regular Community Café sessions to help older people stay connected and live independently in their own homes for longer.

The funding has supported weekly cafés at three local venues, where around 75 people regularly attend. The sessions aren’t just about a cup of tea – they’re filled with activities that help to stimulate, bring laughter and connection. From bingo and New Age Kurling to musical entertainment, quizzes, and live ukulele performances, each session creates opportunities for new friendships and a sense of belonging.

The cafés also serve as an access point to a wider network of support. Other charities and services are regularly invited to attend, offering information and advice tailored to older people’s needs. These include Citizens Advice, Hampshire County Council’s Hitting the Cold Spots team, and the NHS Specialist Falls Team.

The impact of these cafés is clear – they are more than just social events; they’re a vital tool in tackling isolation, improving wellbeing, and ensuring older residents feel valued and supported in their community.

Peter Robson, Trustee of Basingstoke NeighbourCare said: “Mr D is a gentleman who will be 89 this year. He attends our Café most weeks when his health permits. He has been struggling a bit with his health this year; however, we know how much this group means to him from the moment he walked in the first week. He comes every week unless he has an appointment and has made some good friends and really enjoys sitting on the Chat About Table. He came along in the very first week and has encouraged his twin brother to come along each week, this community of support wouldn’t have been possible without support from HIWCF.”

Basingstoke NeighbourCare’s work continues to strengthen local communities – proving how simple, consistent, community-based support can make a big difference to people’s lives.
