HIWCF takes care to ensure that its grant spending is reaching areas of greatest community need and multiple deprivation. According to 2015 data across Hampshire, Southampton, Portsmouth and Isle of Wight there are 114 areas of multiple deprivation which are in the worst 20% across England, including 46 areas in the worst 10%.
The areas chosen for measuring deprivation are Lower Layer Super Output Areas (LSOAs), the smallest geographic area for reporting statistics in England and Wales to be as consistent in population size as possible. The minimum population is 1000 and the mean is 1500, so an LSOA in an urban area might be just a few streets.
In 2016, 70% of HIWCF’s grant spending was directed into the worst 50% of multiple deprived areas across Hampshire, Southampton, Portsmouth and Isle of Wight and we will continue to focus grant spending on the greatest need in our communities.
