Support for Care Leavers grows thanks to partnership funding

HIWCF have recently launched a three year funding programme for local care leavers – a partnership with LAMIT (a group of Local Authorities working together through one of our investment firms, CCLA) and Sovereign Network Group (SNG). With over 2,500 care leavers aged between 18 and 25 currently living in Hampshire, these tailored funds are enabling more care leavers and care experienced young people to access the help they need during their transition to adulthood and independent living.

Originally £99,000 over three years, this fund was generously doubled by Sovereign Network Group, who immediately understood the need for increased support for these young people.

Andrew Cooper, Head of Partnerships and Funding at SNG said:

“Working in partnership with HIWCF has enabled our funding to be doubled to benefit those who need it most to enjoy better lives. SNG houses many care leavers and this partnership with HIWCF allows us to support young people to be able to make secure and sustainable lives. Our mission as a housing association is not just to provide homes but to support thriving communities and to make great places to live. Our partnership and support of HIWCF forms a key part of achieving these goals. The transition into adulthood and independent living for care leavers can be devastating, with a third of care leavers in the UK becoming homeless within the first two years of leaving care. A huge 39% of UK care leavers aged 19 – 21 years are not in education, employment or training, compared to 13% of all 19 to 21 year olds.”

Grants have been given to local youth organisations who are providing expert support for young care leavers to manage the challenges of adulthood that their peers would often be able to turn to family members for. Much needed funds are helping with the practical aspects of adulthood like budgeting, furnishing flats, investing in tools and equipment to support studies and transition into work. They are also used for professional support for emotional issues if they have had traumatic experiences.

Jacqui Scott, CEO of HIWCF, said:

“Funds from this programme are aimed at enabling young people who have left care to get the right help at the right time. They could be used to access items that we often take for granted, but are vital for every day life. For example, a laptop is now a vital piece of equipment for study and a smart outfit is a must have for interviews. For many young people, parents are able to help cover these costs – but that simply may not be possible for a care leaver. We are so pleased that this funding will also reach groups delivering effective support to young care leavers, as well as to young care leavers themselves to utilise in the ways they most urgently need.”

Through this funding, three local charities are making a positive impacts on the young care leavers they support. Hear more from Youth Options, The Youth Trust and Motiv8…

“From September 2024 the Youth Trust have been fortunate to gain funding through HIWCF and now have the opportunity to provide enhanced support for young people who have been in the care system and transitioning into adulthood. With a highly skilled, enthusiastic and dedicated Care Leaver Link Worker recruited, the service is now operating to deliver bespoke support to those needing it.
Recognising the unique challenges care experienced individuals face, the dedicated Link Worker carries out an in-depth support needs analysis. Alongside this, the young person can also utilise the core services of the Youth Trust which includes housing support, careers guidance, social empowerment and enablement and in-depth mental health-based information, advice and guidance.”

“Our key aim from working with HIWCF through this grant round is to support Care Leavers to develop and maintain healthy relationships, creating safer, healthier and happier lives for themselves.

“In a short space of time we have been able to achieve just that. We have increased the opportunities available to young people, offering them the support they need to thrive. We have increased our key work services, allowing us to offer more activities and address more needs. We have also planned in a Residential for the new year where we will be able to really solidify the work we have been doing to create our own Healthy Relationships LASER qualification. This is incredibly beneficial as it not only allows the young people involved to take ownership of the project, fully understand how to cultivate and maintain healthy relationships, and earn their own qualification, but will allow us to embed this opportunity in our future care leavers programmes, allowing us to support young people to feel empowered for years to come.

“We are incredibly grateful to HIWCF for the opportunity to make this possible.”
